The ACOR Library is the heart of the services provided to researchers and scholars, The library houses a large collection of books and periodicals on the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the archaeological sites within its boundaries.It has a comprehensive collection of archaeological books on the Arab Middle East.
Over 35,000 volumes are on hand at this time and donations and purchases are expanding the reference collection rapidly.In an effort to provide better service, the library has undertaken the task of developing a common database between itself, other research institutes in Amman and the local universities. In the interest of efficiency and economy, efforts have been made to eliminate duplication in the Jordanian libraries. If one source of publications is available, the libraries seek not to overlap the same resources. Cooperation with other libraries in Jordan and development of unique assets and resources are key goals of the ACOR Library.
ACOR plans to expand specific subject matter resources. If you are acquainted with the library and would like to suggest new acquisitions, for example foundation texts in disciplines that are relevant to ACOR’s scholarly pursuits, please see the link below. This effort is essential to keep the Center current and to support the needs of researchers across disciplines.
Generous funding for the renewal of furniture and computers in the library has been provided by the U.S. Embassy in Jordan, USAID and USIA, the Canada Fund, the Embassy of Canada, and the Government of Canada. There is a close relationship between the Canadian Embassy and the United States Embassy in that both have supported ACOR and the Library to meet the needs into the future.
The ACOR Library has been privileged to receive two Getty Foundation Library Acquisitions grants in 2003-5 and 2006-8. The Getty Foundation enabled ACOR to significantly expand its collection of resources in the fields of archaeology, art history and conservation.A collection of maps of Jordan is also maintained for reference and planning. Wireless internet is available for residents and fellows.
In 2007 ACOR inititated a subscription to OPAC search software that enables remote visitors to view the ACOR library content. Please note, however, that we are a non-circulating library and it is not permitted to take books out of the library at any time.
Also in 2007, ACOR began to provide researchers at the ACOR library with access to JSTOR, the scholarly journal online archive. In their own words, "JSTOR is a not-for-profit organization with a dual mission to create and maintain a trusted archive of important scholarly journals, and to porvide access to these journals as widely as possible. JSOR offers researchers the ability to retireve high-resolution, scanned images of journal issues and pages as they were originally designed, printed and illustrated."
The Andrew. W. Mellon Foundation has funded ACOR's access to JSTOR though the Diginal Library for International Research Initiaitive of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC). The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation's commitment to this project substanially enhances the resources available at the ACOR library to resident scholars, fellows, and library visiors.
